How To: Index Usenet easily using Newznab

Edit: See how to install your own windows version of newznab here: http://www.tiag.me/installing-newznab-with-xampp-on-windows/

I’ve been a big Usenet fan for years, absolutely love it. But I’ve always been curious about how I could start to index Usenet for myself.

I guess there’s no _real_ reason to do this, but if I can run something myself, I usually try to!

A few months ago I stumbled across a fantastic piece of software called Newznab. Written in PHP, Newznab allows you to process headers from your Usenet provider and create NZB files. As it’s written in PHP, it runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.

If you want to get a taste for Newznab, there are a few websites online that use Newznab such as Nzb.su or DogNzb (however I believe DogNzb only use the backend of Newznab and use their own front end)

Very briefly, Newznab in a nutshell:

  • Index usenet
  • Create NZB files
  • Preview Downloads
  • Check RARs for passwords
  • Add meta information to releases (such as images, episode information, ratings etc)
  • Access all this information through an API
  • SEO Friendly
  • Simple CMS
  • Sphinx MySQL Support
  • Can integrate in to Sickbeard, Couchpotato, Lazy Library and Headphones

There is a GPL version of Newznab which contains all you need to index usenet, but I can’t stress enough how much it’s worth donating (even as little as 10 euros) to get the Newznab + install with updated regex’s from the community and much much more.

Theres an IRC channel on SynIRC – #Newznab which has a fantastic community behind, if you’re starting your own Newznab install and you get stuck, that’s the place to be.

No doubt there will be more posts from me on Newznab, as I’m a huge fan!

  1. set up newznab+ on Windows (uniserver) and it’s working OK, would never have bothered had nzbs.org not disappeared off the face of the planet, makes me appreciate that site even more now for their sheer weight of content and the way it was organized, makes my indexer look puny in comparison.

  2. http://nzbindex.in is an example of newznab server. Pls check.

  3. Just created my own indexer http://nzbid.org/ and I must say newznab works very good. Installation was rather simple and using a good server database updates fast.

  4. I found a newznab fork with the name nzedb and its works much better than newznab. an exapmle site http://autonzb.co .
