Reading package list 0%

I recently had an issue on Linux Mint (Ubuntu based) where apt-get upgrade was just getting stuck each time on Reading Package list 0%.

This is how I fixed it:

rm /var/lib/dpkg/status
cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
dpkg --configure -a
mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
aptitude update
aptitude upgrade

It ran pretty slowly during the update and upgrade especially in reading the packages, presumably while it created new caches. Once it was done everything was fine.

  1. thanks, worked for me :)

  2. Tried these steps, stuck in a loop hell. Package lists hangs at 0% and when I try to run your steps, I get hung up at

    dpkg –configure -a
    Setting up locales (2.13-38+rpi2+deb7u1) …
Generating locales (this might take a while)…
    en_GB.UTF-8…

its like no matter what I do, I cant get it to work. Any ideas would be appreciated?
