Setting up time synchronising on Centos 6

This guide is intended for UK servers but is pretty simple to adapt for any other timezone.

Firstly, I installed the ntp daemon.

yum install ntp

chkconfig ntpd on

ntpdate uk.pool.ntp.org

service ntpd start

Next, setting the timezone. Maybe this should be done first but it doesn’t make any difference. We’re basically deleting the existing localtime and making a symbolic link to Centos’ stash of timezone info, located in /usr/share/zoneinfo.

rm /etc/localtime
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/London /etc/localtime

Then just run the command date to confirm the correct date and time are set.
